Are you a self-proclaimed Ohio City enthusiast or want to learn more about the Cleveland community? Most young professionals know the bars, restaurants and retail that line West 25th but do you know the journey of how this Cleveland neighborhood became what it is today? Join Engage! Cleveland for our inaugural Young Professionals Summit: Ohio City Edition on Friday, September 22 from 1-5 p.m. to find out how well you really know Ohio City.
You’ll join fellow Cleveland young professionals (YPs) for a one-day immersive summit where you will receive a crash course in economic development, civic engagement, professional networking and volunteerism while learning all about the hidden gems and rich history of “Cleveland’s Complete Neighborhood.”
We hope you leave this one-day excursion into Ohio City with a renewed sense of inspiration and vision. You’ll gain the tools needed to understand what it takes to invest, develop and implement that new initiative or project you’ve been dreaming about leading at work or in your neighborhood.
What can you expect?
We will kick off the day learning about the largest urban farm in America, Ohio City Farm and find out the farm is a key component in Cleveland’s regional food system and how it boosts our local food economy.
Ashley Shaw, Economic Development and Planning Manager at Ohio City Inc. and Catie Moore, Gallery Manager at the Transformer Station will guide us on a walking tour of those Instagram worthy murals you see around town as we learn how this public art initiative has transformed the community. We’ll explore the cultural and artistic fabric that makes Ohio City a true staple of Cleveland’s art and cultural scene.
After our immersive tour of Ohio City, we’ll move onto our panel discussion with Ohio City’s movers and shakers. We’ll hear firsthand from the arts and culture, entrepreneurial, education and nonprofit leaders who are moving Ohio City forward. We’ll learn what they’re doing to grow their businesses and organizations as well as Ohio City in this urban setting. This impressive who’s who of Ohio City includes: Fred Bidwell, Founder of Transformer Station and Ohio City Investor and Pioneer, Sam McNulty, Owner of Market Garden, Bar Cento, McNulty's Bier Markt, Speakeasy and Nano Brew; John Gill, Director of St Ignatius’s Arrupe Neighborhood Partnership; Natalie Leek Nelson, CEO of Providence House.
The day will conclude with a keynote speech by Tom McNair, Executive Director of Ohio City Incorporated and Kerry McCormack, Cleveland City Councilman. Together these gentlemen are leading the charge on moving Ohio City forward through their respective roles in the government and nonprofit sectors.
After our day of learning and exploring, we’ll mingle and discuss the day over appetizers and drinks at Market Garden Brewery.
