HEDGE Gallery is proud to present its first solo exhibition with established Cleveland artist Nikki Woods, opening September 15, 5:00-9:00pm. Woods currently is the Acting Director of the Cleveland Institute of Art Reinberger Gallery.
Since her last exhibit at the Gallery in the summer of 2015, Nikki Woods’ artistic style and use of medium have evolved to reflect her commentary on current political and sociological issues, but her undying love for paint continues to shine.
Her upcoming exhibition, titled “Regrets Only” will include recent paintings, as well as porcelain objects and a multi media installation. The title, both literal and ambiguous, refers to requests listed on invitations and the feeling of loss or disappointment, conjuring paradoxical tensions in the work. Tensions between image and form, materiality and space, artifice and truth, merge together to bring forth a feeling or energy that resonates.
Nikki’s new work is also a commentary on our society’s ultra glamorous lifestyles and the false impressions they have on the everyday person. Her painting “Manhattan Triplex “ is derived from an image of Donald Trump’s 1985 living room, gaudy yet enticing with its golden candelabra and overflowing bowls of luscious flowers. The setting is an example of the conflicting emotions that exist in our society, and the tensions that are created in a place where things can and cannot be at at once.
Nikki states, “The objects and scenes I choose to paint are not representative of real space, but the imagined narrative in which we wish to appear. These imagined spaces are often wrought with conflict—beautiful, tragic, and strange all at once.”
«Regrets Only» will open on September 15, 5:00-9:00pm. If you are interested in preveiwing the exhibit before the opening reception, the Gallery will be open from 11a-5p on Friday the 15th.
This exhibit will be on view through November 3, 2017.
