Have you ever wanted to learn blacksmithing? Come try your hand at forging iron at Cleveland Blacksmithing located in Cleveland's historic neighborhood of Ohio City. Join us for a full day action-packed workshop that is a combination of all of our three introductory classes! Get the most out of one awesome Saturday of at-the-anvil instruction and quickly advance to intermediate classes.
>> This is a one-time all day Saturday class meeting from 9:30am to 4:30pm. Participants should be able to attend the full session. No previous metalworking experience necessary. Lunch and beverages provided.*
— Topics covered will be:
1. “Get your hands hot”: Learn your way around a blacksmith shop including general safety practices, learning to light a forge, and the basic tools used in this age old craft. We'll go over basic form of forging iron; heating, stance at the anvil and hammer swing.You'll take your first crack at hammering hot metal on an anvil!
2. “Taper & Twist”: Get down to the business of forging and making a point. Mostly at-the-anvil instruction. Make a few useful wall hooks and get started on a few more utilitarian pieces like fire pokers, candle holders, etc. Have a first try at twisting a hot iron bar.
3. “Bending & Scrolling”: Learn continued basics of decorative shaping and apply them to coming away with a few more awesome household pieces! A variety of traditional snub-end, fishtail, and Art Nouveau scrolls will be discussed. Other bending/shaping topics to be discussed on request.
— No previous metalworking experience is necessary.
Cost includes all steel, fuel, welding consumables and other shop supplies involved in introductory instruction.
Must wear closed toe shoes.
Class size is limited to ensure everyone receives one on one instruction.
