“Oh, the Humanity” by Will Eno
Synopsis: Two people and their two chairs seek to find meaning and direction in life, seek to find just the tiniest shred of certainty, consistency. A stranger arrives — though he doesn't do what strangers always do, when strangers arrive. If you were ever born, and expect to ever die, this might be a play for you.
Man (age 30 – 50) – the realist, in mourning
Woman (age 30 – 50) – oblivious to the tragedies of life; the optimist
The Stranger (ageless) – commentator on the action
“Relative Strangers” by Sheri Wilner
Synopsis: A young airline passenger decides that the woman seated next to her might be the mother she never had. She finds an ally in a wacky stewardess who, unlike the reluctant mother figure, believes these two passengers are a match made in heaven.
Marie Harvey (age mid-50s) – a woman on her way to her divorce hearing; bitter and cynical
Marie Barrett (age 25) – a lost soul, looking for advice on live
Virginia (age 30-40) – the flight attendant; sassy and meddling
“Sonata for Armadillos” by Jon Tuttle
Synopsis: It’s a hot day for three misfits stuck on the Dallas-bound Greyhound bus. Walton wants to be a Cowboy, Nella wants a cowboy, and Stymie’s on the run from Stymie – and just might outrun him. At the end of the road comes sublimity, companionship, and forgiveness, at last.
Walton – “about 25 or so. To us, he’s a brutish, malformed Texan. To Nella, he’s a chiseled side of Texan manhood, a great Promethean mound of brooding cowboy flesh…looks damned pensive for a Texan. He’s slower’n a two-cylander half-ton…”
Nella –“an 18-year-old, corn-fed squishy squab of a girl, God bless her…She’s one of those people who could stand in the shopping mall all day and nobody would ever see her. When she speaks, she self-consciously struggles for the right word and syntax…”
Stymie – “a big ol’ Carolinian about Walton’s age….He’s been on the road a few days, and looks it. Ordinarily a happy kinda guy, he’s now troubled by…well, he won’t say…”
Read Through on Sunday, April 22 at 7:00pm.
