FRIDAY MAY 18 / 9PM-2AM/ $8 / 18+
IN TRAINING is back for May flowers and steamy spring showers to inundate you with a lively night of talent from friends far and wide, but close to the heart no matter what.
NAEEM [DJ] (HOT MASS/DETOUR, PITTSBURGH) — Closing out our night this month is non other than Hot Mass resident and steel city gem Naeem. One of the minds behind the DETOUR record label and monthly residency at Hot Mass (as well as being labeled the "unsung hero" of Hot Mass itself), it's easy for anyone to attest to Naeem being an irreplacable asset to electronic music in Pittsburgh, just as likely to be the first person on the dancefloor dancing to someone's set as he is to be the l...ast person leaving the club after helping clean up after the party. Blending all styles ranging from house, acid, techno, electro, and industrial with the appetite of a true midwest meets college radio DJ style, Naeem will be serenading us with a machine funk sound that has gained him accolades everywhere from Berlin, Buffalo, Detroit, NYC, and in the hearts and minds of participants in underground dance music across America. Recently, he's also been heating things up on the production side of things, with a stunning standout contribution track to the PGH Electro Vol.1 compilation on Is / Was.
HIM HUN [LIVE] (HAUS OF HUN, CHICAGO/CLEVELAND) — IN TRAINING is as proud as ever to welcome back one of our extended family members to the stage, our sister in filth and a beacon of light in the world, the one and only Him Hun! Anyone who's seen her jaw dropping performances at In Training over the last year (solo and in collaboration with UNIKOVE or her own HAUS OF HUN siblings) knows to expect an expertly choreographed and curated performance, combining forward thinking electronic sounds with expert physicality and a beautiful dose of queer feminine energy. Having recently made the move to Chicago where she's been taking the city by storm with her performing talents and burgeoning DJ chops, she's also taken the production world by storm recently with her debut album FETWIFE and various sonic tidbits online. She'll be taking the stage for the night in between Mischa Lively and Naeem's sets, and is sure to enthrall us all with what she has in store.
MISCHA LIVELY [LIVE] (RACECAR PRODUCTIONS, NASHVILLE) — Mischa Lively is the producer alias of muscle-bound drummer Blake Barton which explores dense compositions of percussion and echoing bass, scattered perfectly in place upon a canvas in motion. His dancefloor compositions recall the rubbery gymnastic routines of artists on Livity Sound, Timedance and Mistry — that is, to say, unafraid to innovate within the space of 4/4, but syncopated in a way that feels slightly off-kilter and intoxicatingly out of control. His live sets attempt to replicate and build off this sonic palette, utilizing real-time sampling, warbling vinyl record scuff, deep bass and live percussion played by Barton himself. Studying myriad treatment techniques, Barton then executed a vision unmoored to binary ideas about “live” versus “electronic,” blurring lines as he composed with an ear for IDM, dub, techno, and ambient music.
FATHER OF TWO [DJ] (IN TRAINING, CLEVELAND) — Opening up In Training for the first time since December will be our resident bass music devotee and husky appreciator Father of Two, bringing his intricate blends of snappy, strange, and sub rattling music to help us warm up for the rest of the night. Fresh off gigs at THE STUD in San Francisco and Bossa Nova Civic Club in NYC, this proud parent is in his prime and ready to make the leather boys and queens go inside the corridors of their mind before dancing the night away.
IN TRAINING events are intended to be a space for autonomous living for oppressed and marginalized people who have run afoul of society's expectations with regards to gender, sexuality, race, class and ability. It's a party that also emphasizes practicing good consent on the dancefloor and helping people who feel unsafe in public spaces — especially club environments — feel safe and welcome. If anyone interferes with your enjoyment of this event by harassing, groping or otherwise behaving in an oppressive manner, please let the promoters and venue staff know and we will have them removed. We would also like to remind everyone that this is an 18+ event, and we reserve the right to verify ages at the door.
